My Education as a Shoe Saleman

Filed under: Apparel — admin @ 1:03 pm

As a younger adult I had more than 1 shoe salesman job. The second job I had was at a family store where the focus was on fitting infant and toddler shoes. What I learned from this job is that most parents have a very biased perspective about the true walking ability of their children. You see one of the questions we had to ask was about the child’s walking skill development in order to select the right shoe construction for that child.

I saw parents swear their child was walking independently when all I saw was a child holding onto their parent’s knee for dear life. As soon as I moved the child away from the parent, they’d start crawling back.

The education here is that when you are emotionally vested in a person or outcome, you may not have the most objective views of the real situation no matter what you tell yourself.
